Lenovo Announces World?s First Android 4.0 TV

Lenovo has announced plans to release an Android 4-powered smart TV, called the K91, which will come out first in China and then around the world.

It will have a 1080p IPS display, a 1.5 gigahertz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and a built-in 5 megapixel camera to support face recognition. In addition to the Android 4, the K91 will also run a second interface which Lenovo calls "the Sandwich UI" that can handle video on demand, "Internet apps," and regular TV programming.

The K91 is the first TV to be powered by Qualcomm's 1.5 gigahertz dual-core SnapDragon 8060 CPU. The company says it will have access to "thousands" of apps from the Android Market and the Lenovo Store, but it's unclear how the company will highlight TV-optimized apps.

According to a press release, the TV will be controllable through speech as well as with a compatible tablet or smartphone.

HBT: M's sign Iwakuma, bolster bullpen

From ESPN?s Jerry Crasnick comes word that the Mariners have signed Japanese right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma to a one-year, $1.5 million major league contract. The agreement also carries another $3.4 million in performance-based incentives.

Iwakuma, 30, registered a superb 2.42 ERA and 90/19 K/BB ratio in 119 innings last season for the?Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of Nippon Professional Baseball. He posted a 2.82 ERA and 153/36 K/BB ratio across 201 innings in 2010.

The A?s tried to sign Iwakuma last offseason, offering up a $19 million posting fee for exclusive negotiating rights, but the two sides ultimately failed to work out a major league contract.?If everything goes well in spring training with the Mariners, the 6-foot-3 native of Tokyo should grab a spot at the back end of the Seattle starting rotation.

Jersey Shore Season Premiere Recap: New Summer, Same Old Situation

Booze. Smooshing. Fights. More Booze. Grenades. Kooka.

They get on our nerves at times, but like family members, we're not ashamed to admit we the Jersey Shore crew and their unique brand of crazineess, even if the fourth season concluded a mere two months ago. Welcome back to America, brah.

Throughout much of last season in Italy, Mike was trying to insert himself in Snooki, and Snooki's relationship with Jionni. That was pretty much the case again in the Season 5 premiere Thursday night, at least the latter part. So what went down?

Come along for THG's official recap, +/- style!!

The Situation, No Pants

The roommates head back home and begin filming Season 5 in N.J. immediately, a move MTV said was to "preserve chemistry." More like not allow the ticking time bomb any opportunity to reset. Plus 10 for the viewers who benefit.

As they run up the stairs to the Seaside house, it's like they never left. We feel strangely at home there too by now, even if we feel the need to bathe in hand sanitizer and rubbing alcohol after watching each episode. Plus 5.

The first hours back at the Shore are spent: Downing pickle juice (Snook, Plus 5), downing Ron Ron Juice (All, Plus 5), dry humping (Vinny and Pauly, a little over the top, but Plus 1) and a strollin' on the boardwalk (Plus 4). Like old times.

"I'm tanorexic, bro." - Pauly D, about to get his GTL on. Plus 3.

Minus 7 for a pro like Pauly going so overboard. Rookie mistake.

Minus 7 more for Vinny's douche-tastic new haircut. WOW.

Piccccccckles!

Shore Store boss Danny invites the gang out to some bar called Captain Hook's, where ... everyone's family and friends had assembled to see them! Say what you will, they were genuinely shocked and emotional and it was sweet to watch. Plus 8.

Of course Uncle Nino is straight up CREEPIN' on the girls. Plus 12.

Things get awkward when Snooki hugs Vinny's mom in front of her boyfriend Jionni. These things happen when you sleep with everyone you know. Minus 9.

JWoww, now firmly entrenched as the most sane member of the house, almost goes out of her way to avoid drama nowadays. We love us some Jenni. Plus 5.

Oh $h!t. UNIT in the house! Plus 14 for introducing this as-yet-unseen pal of Mike's, who supposedly "saw" the infamous Sitch-Snooki bodily-fluid exchange.

Minus 3 for the general grossness of the Unit, howev.

Snooki, whose BFF Ryder (heretofore known as Ryd-her) is also in town, is FAR from pleased that Unit will be staying in Seaside. The plot thickens. Plus 4.

“This is hurricane season,” Mike warns. “And it’s headed straight for Snooki Island.” Really, Mike? Even you can do better than that one, brah. Minus 17.

Snook and Situation

Lots of back and forth bleeped-out yelling (all while Jionni was in the bathroom) but in the end, nothing was clarified. That's Jersey Shore for you. Plus 6.

Ronnie felt Snooki's reaction indicated a guilty conscience. Ya think?! Plus 8.

The Situation and The Unit get comfortable back at the Seaside house, standing around talking in no pants. That's not weird whatsoever guys. Minus 11.

Plus 15 for Mike being so open about his obvious gay tendencies, though.

Roger sighting, albeit far too brief. Good dude, right? Plus 4.

Pauly and Ryder become one in a full-on make-out session in front of Deena, who didn't seem too pleased. This crew is getting beyond incestuous. Minus 12.

"Whether you're the first man in, or the last man in… Ryd-er." Plus 20.

“Ryder’s f***ed everyone in the house,” says Vin. “If she f***s Ronnie, it’s like guido Bingo! Everybody ride her, just like a bus route.” Jay-Z? So proud. Plus 7.

Sad Vinny

Jionni decides to try to pare down the tension by buying drinks for Mike, and Sitch, who was admittedly wondering why, was nonetheless appreciative. Keep your friends close and your enemies closer? Not an awful strategy, J. Plus 6.

"Mike's a nice guy. He's nice to me." - Jionni. Did MTV cut off this guy's cable package or something? He obviously hasn't seen Jersey Shore Season 4. Minus 7.

Club Aztec? Grenades and land mines everywhere. It's like the Green Zone. Minus 6.

Poor Vinny is "in a funk" after seeing his family. Pauly D tries to comfort him amid threats to leave Seaside, but this is one homesick puppy, despite being a mere two hours away. Eh. You get paid to party and get it in, dog. Suck it up. Minus 10.

EPISODE TOTAL: +39!

Obama must keep US military in Afghanistan to counter China, Russia

The Obama administration must recognize that a total military withdrawal would have effects beyond Afghanistan's borders. It would devastate US interests ? both political and economic ? throughout Central Asia, a critical region where China and Russia now dominate.

As 2011 drew to a close, so did US military involvement in Iraq. Amid domestic pressure, Iraqi opposition to an American military presence, and a breakdown in negotiations between the US and Iraqi governments, the Obama administration withdrew all of its military forces from Iraq, and will soon face a similar decision in Afghanistan.

Though Afghanistan has requested a long-term security commitment, President Obama will likely encounter opposition from his political base as well as thorny issues like how to handle night raids and Afghan prisoners held by US troops. But as his administration continues its negotiations with the Afghan government, it must recognize that a total?withdrawal would have effects beyond Afghanistan?s borders. Simply put, it would devastate US interests ? both geopolitical and commercial ? throughout Central Asia.

Central Asia is a hugely significant region for the United States. It sits at the crossroads of important rivals and rising powers, like China, Russia, and India, and next to threats like Pakistan and Iran. The region also boasts significant oil and gas reserves, as well as large quantities of lithium, copper, rare earth minerals, gold, and many other natural resources that are critical drivers to global commerce.

Yet most of Central Asia has very little US presence. Few US companies operate in the region, largely because the Russian and Chinese governments successfully use threats ? both explicit and implicit ? to prevent Central Asian republics from opening their doors to Western firms.

In the Middle East, the US has troops and security relationships with a variety of countries (Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and the United Arab Emirates, among others) and can thus absorb the Iraq pullout without sustaining too much of a strategic blow to our regional interests. In Central Asia, however, America?s footprint is very light. It no longer has an air base in Uzbekistan and has only a few hundred troops at an air base Kyrgyzstan.

That leaves Afghanistan as America?s only beachhead ? and a willing participant at that ? altering the power dynamics in the region. The US certainly derives valuable intelligence and counter-terrorism benefits from having troops stationed in a country that borders Iran, Pakistan, and China. Even more important, however, a US presence in Afghanistan signals that the US is serious about Central Asia and that it will be a player there for the foreseeable future.

Study reveals factors associated with prevention, control of HIV infection

MEDIA AVAILABILITY Experimental vaccine partially protects monkeys from HIV-like Infection: Study reveals factors associated with prevention, control of HIV infection

WHAT: New vaccine research in monkeys suggests that scientists are homing in on the critical ingredients of a protective HIV vaccine and identifies new HIV vaccine candidates to test in human clinical trials. The research, which appears online in Nature on Jan. 4, was co-funded by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health.

In the study, scientists report that several Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV) prime-boost vaccine regimens have demonstrated partial protection against acquisition of infection by a virulent, tough-to-neutralize SIV strain that is different from the strain used to make the vaccinea scenario analogous to what people might encounter if an HIV vaccine were available. The experimental vaccine regimens reduced the monkeys' likelihood of becoming infected per exposure to SIV by 80 to 83 percent compared to a placebo vaccine regimen. Further, in those monkeys that did become infected, the experimental vaccine regimens substantially reduced the amount of virus in the blood compared to controls. Now plans are underway for early-stage clinical trials of a human-adapted version of one of the study's prime-boost vaccine combinations.

The best predictor of protection from SIV in the vaccinated monkeys was the presence of antibodies that latched onto the virus surface protein. This finding reinforces what scientists have learned so far about why the first modestly effective HIV vaccine (http://www.niaid.nih.gov/news/newsreleases/2009/Pages/ThaiVaxStudy.aspx) worked in humans and indicates that the HIV surface protein Env is a critical vaccine ingredient. The new research also provides strong evidence that the immune system's mechanism for preventing infection is significantly different from its mechanism for controlling viral replication.
