Nickelodeon kicks off its 25th annual Kids' Choice Awards at 8 p.m. EDT Saturday night in Los Angeles, with host Will Smith and a parade of celebrity guests. But the highlight of the awards is always the green slime that's ceremoniously dumped on the stars.

Katy Perry and British boy band One Direction are both expected to perform, and Michelle Obama will present Taylor Swift an award to honor her philanthropic efforts.

For the awards, kids vote for their favorites in film, music, sports and TV. This year, the concluded "Harry Potter" franchise tops nominees with four nominations.

Expected attendees to the event on the campus of the University of Southern California include Robert Downey Jr., Chris Rock, Zac Efron and Nicki Minaj.

Why couldn't Rep. Bobby Rush wear hoodie on House floor?

A hoodie won't fly on the House floor, where dress code mandates no hats ? and a hoodie counts as a hat, even when its used to bring attention to Trayvon Martin.

Hoodies on the House floor are verboten, apparently. Rep. Bobby Rush (D) of Illinois was scolded and escorted from the chamber of the House of Representatives on Wednesday morning, when he attempted to give a speech on the need for a full investigation of the Trayvon Martin shooting while wearing sunglasses and a gray hooded sweat shirt.

?Racial profiling has to stop, Mr. Speaker,? said Representative Rush while doffing his suit jacket to reveal his hoodie garb. ?Just because someone wears a hoodie does not make them a hoodlum.?

Rush continued to speak while the presiding officer, Rep. Gregg Harper (R) of Mississippi, banged the gavel, ordering him to desist. Eventually someone from the office of the House sergeant-at-arms appeared and escorted Rush, hoodie and all, off the floor.

The reason for the uproar is that Congress has a dress code. Men are expected to wear coats and ties, and women to wear correspondingly serious clothing. Under?House Rule XVII, Section 5, hats are prohibited, and a hoodie is unquestionably a head covering.

?The Sergeant-at-Arms is charged with the strict enforcement of this clause,? concludes that section.

Senior Democrats played down the kerfuffle. Minority leader Nancy Pelosi noted that when she first came to Congress, women were prohibited from wearing pants on the floor. But really, why should the House be such a stickler on items of dress? In the 1830s and 1840s ? admittedly, a much more heated era in US history ? many lawmakers carried weapons, and violence was not uncommon. In some Asian legislatures today, debates can end in fistfights.

The reason for the rules on decorum may be that civility stands on a slippery slope.

?As [humorist] Will Rogers observed, members call themselves gentlemen and gentlewomen, because the alternatives would be to call one another polecats and coyotes, or worse, liars, hypocrites, stupid, dumb, demagogues, socialists, communists, none of which lend themselves to the deliberative process so important to the governance of the nation,? wrote Ray Smock, director of the Robert C. Byrd Center for Legislative Studies at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, W.Va., last October.

Mr. Smock, who served as historian of the House from 1983 to 1995, believes that civility now ?is at one of the lowest ebbs in congressional history.?

Such breaches of decorum as the ?You lie!? shout of Rep. Joe Wilson (R) of South Carolina during President Obama?s 2009 speech to Congress on health-care reforms may be indicative of a larger, paralyzing incivility based on bitter partisanship, in Smock?s view.

Narrower measures indicate that Congress may be becoming more civil, not less. An Annenberg Public Policy Center study of the number of times lawmakers are reprimanded for out-of-bounds language by having their words ?taken down? found that infractions have become relatively few and farther between.

?Overall, civility, not incivility, is the norm in the House,? said the September 2011 report.

All that said, Rush had particular incentive to speak out on the Trayvon Martin issue. A former member of the 1960s Black Panthers, Rush was active in the civil rights movement of the era. His own 29-year-old son died of a gunshot.

Ben Affleck Signs for Political Comedy Nathan Decker

Ben Affleck is returning to politics -- and comedy -- with the upcoming Warner Bros. film "Nathan Decker."

The actor will star as a politician who returns to his hometown after his extra-marital affair is made public. Interestingly, Affleck played a cheating congressman in 2009's "State of Play," although "Decker"?will presumably be more light-hearted.

The film, written by Dan Fogelman ("Crazy, Stupid, Love," the upcoming "Guilt Trip"), first attracted Tom Cruise, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Cruise eventually passed, instead focusing on a number of other upcoming projects.

Affleck won't be directing "Nathan," and Warner Bros. is on the lookout for someone to helm the film.

Meanwhile, Affleck's next film as a director is "Argo," a thriller about the 1979 Iranian hostage crisis in in which he's starring alongside Bryan Cranston and Clea DuVall. It hits theaters this fall. Affleck previously helmed "Gone Baby Gone"?and 'The Town."?

As an actor, Affleck will appear in Terrence Malick's? untitled drama co-starring Rachel McAdams and Javier Bardem. He'll also reunite with buddy Matt Damon for a gangster film about Whitey Bulger.

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP) ? Serena Williams kept swinging on the final point, and Caroline Wozniacki kept chasing the ball down, running from side to side in a grueling, grunt-filled exchange.

A weary Williams finally hit one where her relentless opponent couldn't reach it: into the net. With that, Wozniacki had a 6-4, 6-4 victory Tuesday night, and a berth in the Key Biscayne semifinals for the first time.

"I made her run," Wozniacki said.

"Everyone I play always plays the match of the year," Williams said.

Wozniacki, a former No. 1, served well and was content to play patiently from the baseline. She extending rallies until Williams would make a mistake, and the stats told the tale: Williams hit 34 winners to 12 for Wozniacki but also committed 36 unforced errors to the Dane's 13.

"I probably played about 20 percent," Williams said. "I just made a tremendous amount of errors. There's no reason for that. I'm older and I shouldn't do that. There's no excuse. I've just got to stop that. It's silly."

Wozniacki celebrated by blowing kisses to the crowd, which included her boyfriend, golfer Rory McIlory. Her opponent in the semifinals Thursday will be No. 2 Maria Sharapova, who advanced by drubbing French Open champion Li Na 6-3, 6-0.

Sharapova had lost their previous four meetings.

"I just really wanted to change that," she said, "so I was extremely focused and, you know, looking forward to the match."

The buzz Andy Roddick got from beating Roger Federer turned into a hangover when Juan Monaco became a real headache. Less than 24 hours after his upset win over Federer, Roddick endured a drubbing against Monaco, 7-5, 6-0.

Monaco, a patient baseliner seeded 21st, was unfazed by Roddick's big serve, and the match became a succession of long rallies. Roddick began to look weary as the match progressed and stumbled after several shots.

Roddick said he's not in peak condition after being sidelined by right hamstring and right ankle injuries earlier this year.

"I just didn't have it physically," he said. "I got to about 4-all, and I was ? you know, I'm out of shape. That's it."

The loss was a big comedown after Roddick beat Federer for only the third time in 24 tries, temporarily silencing critics who say he should consider retirement.

Roddick's ranking has slipped to 34th, his lowest since 2001. He might return to the top 30 next week, and he said his game is headed in the right direction entering the clay-court season.

"My tennis has come around a long way in the last two weeks, maybe three weeks," he said. "Now I feel good enough where I feel like I can put in the work away from the court and get my legs back under me as far as strength and fitness."

In other men's fourth-round play, No. 2 Rafael Nadal swept five consecutive games during one stretch and beat No. 16-seeded Kei Nishikori 6-4, 6-4.

Nadal, a three-time runner-up at Key Biscayne, lost the final last year to Novak Djokovic, and they could meet again Sunday. The top-ranked Djokovic reached the final eight by beating No. 17-seeded Richard Gasquet 7-5, 6-3.

No. 4 Andy Murray, No. 5 David Ferrer and No. 6 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga also won in straight sets.

No. 8 Mardy Fish edged No. 12 Nicolas Almagro 6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-3. Fish was relegated to the grandstand court for the third consecutive match, even though he's the top-ranked American man, but the slight didn't faze him.

"I certainly want to play on stadium court," Fish said. "But they've got to put someone out on the grandstand, and who's that going to be? Are you going to put Federer out there, or Djokovic, or Nadal, or Serena? I'm not going to go ahead of those guys as far as people coming to watch them play. You've got to go where you've got to go."

The tournament did indeed put Serena on the stadium for the night session, and she found herself in a struggle from the start.

The points were long, with Williams unable to overpower her opponent for a change. She matched a career high with 20 aces in the fourth round but had only four against Wozniacki and lost serve three times.

It was a momentous victory for the No. 4-seeded Wozniacki, whose top ranking last year drew criticism because she hasn't won a Grand Slam title.

"If people talk about me or not, I mean, to be honest, as long as I win, I'm happy," she said.

She had lost her previous three meetings against Williams.

"Serena has won so many Grand Slams and so many tournaments, something that I would love to achieve one day," Wozniacki said. "So to beat someone like her that I know that never gives up is definitely something that means a lot to me."

Williams, seeded 10th, was playing in her first tournament since January after being sidelined by a left ankle injury. She hasn't won a title since August.

There's still one Williams in the tournament: Venus plays No. 5 Agnieszka Radwanska in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

Mites form friendly societies: Predatory mites who stick with familiar individuals are more efficient at finding food

ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? For plant-inhabiting predatory mites, living among familiar neighbors reduces stress. This allows individuals to focus on other tasks and be more productive, in particular while they are foraging. The new study by Markus Strodl and Peter Schausberger, from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna, Austria, supports the theory that so-called 'social familiarity' reduces the cognitive, physiological and behavioral costs of group-living, leading to increased efficiency in other tasks.

Their work is published online in Springer's journal, Naturwissenschaften -- The Science of Nature.

Species living in groups, such as the spider mites' predator, Phytoseiulus persimilis, face a number of stressors including social interactions with other individuals of the same species during the juvenile development phase. This is particularly so when they live in small patches with limited food availability. Within such patches, these individuals compete for food, space and future mates or may even be mutual predators. In order to reduce these conflicts, many group-living species are able to discriminate familiar and unfamiliar individuals based on prior contact, and familiar individuals tend to stick together.

Strodl and Schausberger studied whether a familiar social environment during the juvenile phase had any positive effects on the predatory mite's development. Among this species, group-living is brought about by the predators foraging, reproducing and developing spider mite webs, as well as mutual attraction.

In a series of three experiments, the authors showed that familiarity had significant effects on individual grouping and foraging traits of juvenile P. persimilis. In mixed-age groups of familiar and unfamiliar individuals, familiar individuals preferred to stick together.

Life-stage influenced this grouping behavior: larvae were much closer together than older individuals. In groups of individuals of the same age, the distances between individuals were smaller within groups of familiar mites than within groups of unfamiliar mites.

At similar developmental speed and body size at maturity, juvenile mites held in familiar groups foraged more efficiently than juvenile mites held in unfamiliar groups. The authors also identified a sensitive familiarization period during the larval stage, with memory persisting into the adult stage.

The Global Amateur Radio Emergency Conference (GAREC), now coined as 'MyGAREC 2012', will be held at the Thistle Port Dickson Resort, Negeri Sembilan, from November 12 to 14. It attracts participants from around the world.

The first GAREC was in 2005 and is the premier annual event attended by those with an interest in amateur radio providing emergency communications during training exercises or in response to disasters.

MyGAREC 2012 has been timed to immediately follow the IARU Region 3 Conference in Vietnam (November 5 to 9) which has as its theme disaster relief communications.

General information including information on the venue, registration fees and the tentative agenda and the registration forms will be posted on the website www.mygarec2012.com by the end of this month.

'Bird-Man' Video Confirmed to Be a Hoax

Turns out humans still can't fly, despite the images in a popular YouTube video.

Floris Kaayk, a Dutchman, posted a video titled "Human Birdwings" March 19. In it, he has two large wings attached to his arms. As he takes a running start and flaps his arms, he lifts himself off the ground to look like, well, a flying bird. He soars through the sky and then lands safely on the ground.

Kaayk, or Jarno Smeets, as he nicknamed himself, has become an Internet sensation known as the flying bird-man. The video has gotten more than 4 million views since it posted.

Except, it turns out, he fooled us all.

Or at least some of us. Many started to speculate that Kaayk wasn't actually flying, pointing out inconsistencies in the video. For instance, in one shot there is a spot on the wing and in another there isn't. Others did the math; the wings wouldn't provide the force to lift an 160-pound man off the ground.

And, then, there was the marketing aspect of it. In a making-of-the-wings video, he mentioned that he used a series of products to make the flight happen: two Wii remotes, an HTC Wildfire Android phone, and a GoPro camera to film it all.

Kaayk finally admitted that it was all a hoax on Dutch television?and on his own blog. He confessed that he is a filmmaker and animator and this has been a "fictional online storytelling project."

"'Human Birdwings' was an online adventure and invention story in which fictional character Jarno Smeets developed wings in a do-it-yourself manner," he says.

And there you have it: We'll just have to wait a bit longer to see humans soar into the sky for real.

Waste-to-energy systems will treat at least 261 million tons of waste annually by 2022, with a total estimated output of 283 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity and heat generation, up from 221 TWh in 2010. Under a more optimistic scenario, WTE will potentially treat 396 million tons of MSW a year, producing 429 TWh of power.

Nominated for Best Foreign Film at the 2012 Academy Awards, Agnieszka Holland's IN DARKNESS, is the poor man's SCHINDLER'S LIST, and I mean that as a high compliment. Now don't get me wrong. I think Spielberg made a masterpiece with his Shoah epic, but Holland earns astute emotions and mines similar themes yet in a more intimate setting. Based on the true story of a Polish sewer worker who charged a small group of Jewish refugees a daily fee to squat in the filthy sewers beneath the city. The title of the film is apt, as so much of it takes place in utter darkness. At almost two and a half hours in length, we feel every minute of their intensely long hiding. Like Schindler, our main character, Leopold Socha, played wonderfully by Robert Wieckiewicz, is an opportunist rather than a Jewish sympathizer. In fact, his anti-semitism is much more overt than Schindler's. On the other hand, his wife Wanda, an incredible Kinga Preis, is much more liberal at the outset, but wants to turn her back on the Jews when she fears for her life and that of her family. Their story is so searing, so vivid and unsentimental. It's no wonder I was more drawn to it than to the lives of the various Jews here. While all terrific actors who are given one horrifying scene after another to endure, their plight isn't as layered as that of Socha.There is one exception, and it's played by Benno Furmann, who is the love child of a Patrick Wilson/Josh Lucas bromance. Playing a man who leaves the sewers to escape INTO a concentration camp to save someone's life, he has leading man written all over her face. He easily commands the screen in all of his scenes. One of my all-time favorite critics, Roger Ebert, dismissed this film by saying that we've seen it all before. As much as I respect his opinion, I disagree. Usually films about this period in history tend to glorify the Jewish characters and they make every moment epic. IN DARKNESS does just the opposite. The Jews are just as flawed as any other characters here, as flawed as anybody would be when facing unreal, desperate circumstances. This is not a hyped up film. Something as simple as rainfall becomes an exciting action sequence, but it's played with an ingenious, dispassionate touch that Holland has always brought to her work.

New iPad LTE and HSPA+ radio tests

The new iPad brings with it the option for a new, dual radio that brings with it 72Mbps LTE on AT&T and Verizon in the US and Rogers, Telus, and Bell in Canada. Sadly, there's no international LTE support for Australia, Asia, or Europe yet, perhaps due to the differences in LTE segments around the world. However, the new iPad also brings a new 42Mbps HSPA+ radio for AT&T, Canadian, and international carriers that support it. (Technically dual 21Mbps HSPA+ radios.) Those are theoretical speeds though -- what you get in a lab when alone, sitting on top of a tower. In the real world we're often lucky to see half the theoretical speeds, and often considerably less. That's why we put them to the test.
